The Evolution of a Cult is often marked by clear stages.

1. The Grand Vision

A charismatic leader or leaders introduce a new and transcendent idea pledging a cure for disconnected individuals.

And so it goes. Plans are in motion to storm the compound in Australia. Pressure is mounting. Conflict emerges from the out-houses. An isolated player, vulnerable, shivering, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET smeared across his chest as a statement, has emerged through the lines and is being led away in secrecy to a different team in county cricket.

Do you recall the beginning, when optimism reigned? The initial phase, of Bazball without brains.

2. Initial Adoration

Cult leaders offer a reboot, optimism ahead, love, salvation among a group united in belief in the big idea.

How did it feel initially? A team united basking in glory. Body art. Muscles. Jawlines. Peak performance vibes. Admittedly, England’s players often say Bazball doesn’t actually exist, which is funny since it’s not recognized, what was that spectacle?

However, everyone understands its essence. It’s the player playing a shot so unconventional it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of the captain at his peak, a demeanor suggesting: focused titan, rugged appearance, hair woven from beaver hide, truly contemporary you wouldn’t be surprised to look down and see him playing at mid-off bare-chested holding a fish.

It’s the batsman often seen addressing the media, appearing as a joyful figure smartly dressed, expressing thoughts like we’re challenging norms. Certainly, the energy, initially, was only good energy.

3. Expansion Period

Development stage. Togetherness strengthened by rote learning of the cult’s slogans. These principles are often illogical as a loyalty check.

Am I alone? The criticism, the anger, the sense of betrayal following the initial loss feels overblown, overdone. The batting collapsed on the field, as they often do in Australia. In truth, a few days before from the second Test, we are at a delicious point of tension in the story of this thing. They might succeed overseas with bold tactics. Alternatively, defeat could come swiftly. And if they do lose it seems we could be witnessing the decline.

Prior to that, several aspects worth saying on the topic. Previously, during the initial excitement, of passion and hope, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. People were very angry, which proved the point because everyone knows the best way of proving lack of cult status is if supporters respond with anger denying scrutiny of the philosophy.

The developments lately are fascinating. Criticism of the approach has turned into a movement. We have a uniformly angry internet, angry English pundits, pictures of upset travelling fans missing out on play, reminiscent of people wanting fairness.

On the other hand, exists the larger scene of the host’s complex more culturally hard-wired exasperation at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, out there saying, your cherished traditions and have honed as part of your identity from others, well, it’s all a bit of a gag ultimately.

This is the core issue. Everything is a cult. The style was a trend as the game has its own culture. Or rather, the team has long been exclusive, a clique, a private event, a restricted environment with a long history of tradition and mystery defining it. This has always been where influence is guarded. It’s the imperial sport of England, the original sports washers. And guess what, Britain is itself a cult, a system of unknown levels, a place that literally still has a king.

The players have been enclosed within this world from a young age. Seeking change, to create a less brutal environment, they are just repeating their past, creating another a bubble, an exclusive group, but now with 15 cool guys and a coach encouraging individuality provided you conform.

Focus on the moment. Confront risks. Despite efforts, you’re always basically in the same place.
