Seven alleged members of German far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
