Are You Able to Crack This? That Overlooked Netherlands Creation That Shaped the Modern Globe
One can find many candidates to claim the title of “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, though, that title belongs to the mechanised sawmill conceived by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a modest merchant vessel necessitated around ten sawyers working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical amount of processed timber might be manufactured within a week.”
Thanks to their speedy automated cutter, that turned timber to boards using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch were able to construct ships faster compared to any other nation, which unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands naval, economic and artistic supremacy in Europe and the globe.
The Original Genuine Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, was “humanity’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a wheel. One component converted its rotary motion to up-and-down motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning motion into a lateral motion feeding the log toward the blade. A geared mechanism shifted the log forward one precise increment per stroke.
“Each element seemed simple on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to combine these parts in order that the machine operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each downward stroke and moving with each return motion. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of basic components.”
